Before You Hit the Road
A little planning goes a long way here, especially on the drive to Hāna or an early Haleakalā sunrise. A few things worth knowing before you head out:
Pick the right vehicle
Think about where you're headed. A 4x4 Jeep or 4Runner handles the winding coast roads and early Haleakalā runs, while a comfortable SUV is plenty for beach days and town.
Map your route
On longer drives like the Road to Hāna, plan your gas and food stops ahead of time. Start early too, both to beat the crowds and to catch the summit before the afternoon clouds roll in.
Book ahead
The popular cars book up fast, especially in high season. Reserve early so you get your dates and the car you actually want.
Drive aloha
Take care of the island and the people who live here. Stick to paved roads, pack out whatever you bring in, and slow down through the small towns. One rule to know: off-roading and unpaved routes like Kīpahulu, the Polipoli summit, and Jaws/Peʻahi aren't allowed in our cars.
